Synology DiskStation DS214 was recently released and it’s amazing.
My first NAS was QNAP TS-509PRO in 2009, I still remember excitement when I got it, even more when I compared speed with Netapp 2020. Synology was present in the market but it’s time was about to come. Fast forward couple of years to Year 2010 and we got another NAS from Synology and they announced new Diskstation manager 3.0. When I first saw screenshots of new GUI I was shocked. what? They have created desktop in a desktop, similar to StarOffice, this can’t be any good, they will fail… Boy was I wrong! Synology was improving, tweaking, adding features to DSM and now it’s just perfect!
I use couple of models, at work 1512+, 1812+ and several DS211J and one DS212. At home I have DS211J.
DS214, what is it about?
Synology DS214 is 2 bay NAS for SMB & SOHO.
Design is black, good looking with quality finish. But what makes this model stand out from the competition in the same range is CPU ARMADA XP. For the first time Synology introduced ARM CPU that is capable, very capable in fact. For the first time Read/Write times exceeded 100MB/s with entry model with ARM CPU, in the past, if you wanted speed you have to use Intel Atom inside, period.
Features:
Dual Core CPU with Floating-Point Unit
Excellent Reading/Writing Performance over 100MB/s
Fastest Encrypted Data Transfer-rate in its Product Sector
Features SuperSpeed USB3.0
Hot-swappable & Tool-Less Hard Drive Tray Design

DS214 performance
Performance is almost perfect, it can match Intel based siblings and for the price it’s a top notch model. With both upload and download at 100MB/s it’s a great improvement over older models.
ISCSI performance is on par with DS713, with download at 100MB/s and download little below 100MB/s.
While It can’t match performance of the higher end models, its fast, super fast for a home or a SMB network and it can also be used for some special cases where price and cost are important.
