I was assigned to a project where e-commerce team wanted to do some website monitoring. After initial discussions, website monitoring expanded to: „Hey, how would our websites fare under load? How many clients can we serve?“ Soon I had to find a solution that would be cheap, reliable, and had great features.
Soon I stumbled on Monitis.com, let me tell you, that it is a great product.
So, How to monitor and load test websites? With Monitis, but not only websites, Monitis can monitor local infrastructure like switches and servers as well, but more on that topic later on, I will test it and do another post. In addition to Monitis you should also test website speed, and test website speed and load time. Don’t forget to optimize images, as they can reduce load time. Don’t forget to use a monitoring tool like NewRelic to see how your server performs when you send some load to your website.
Monitis Dashboard
Dashboard looks very nice, you can see all uptime of websites in one place, plus, you can see load tests.
Uptime report
If you want to focus on uptime, there is uptime report. There you can see uptime for all the websites you have added to Monitis to monitor. If website was down, Monitis will notice and will provide you with uptime in percentage.
Notifications
You can set contacts that will receive notifications, now imagine being notified that site is down and for how long as well. You can act immediately and save your company real money. You can also set receiving alerts by SMS in addition to email and IOS / Android app. In the notifications view you see all the contacts on the left side and on the right side you can see downtime for your sites. It’s very transparent especially for review when you log in yo monitis website.
SLA Report
Now about SLA, if you have important website like web commerce that generates money for your company you need to be sure that hosting company is really providing you the service that you pay for. What is important to note is that while some companies can provide you with SLA of 99.8% (or something better) for a month, that could mean that there could be multiple failures in minute increments in thee night time, or the site could be down for 1.44 hour in a row. If the site is down for 1.44 hours in the night your business won’t be really affected, perhaps the sale or two. But what if the site goes down at the highest peak? What’s even more important, is the fact the a website could be down for more that SLA your hosting provider guarantees. Then you need a tool that will get you that information so you can act on and either work with provider to improve their service or change provider.
What is really important is the fact that if you don’t have information about down time, you don’t know how much money you are loosing. And here is where Montis come’s in to play.
Best of all, pricing is what makes Monitis stand out. Their plan starts at 5$/Month. If you need to monitor 4 websites from 3 locations in 1 minute increments, and if you wan’t to run page loads for all 4 websites from 2 locations in 20min. increments for that would cost 44,80$/month! That is very cheap if you consider that this 4 websites are generating you money and you have full overview on how they preform. If you are using WordPress, you can check what you can achieve with your $10 VPS easily. Friend called me today and said that once he read Monitis review he did a trial and love and use the product since.
You can check this great service on Monitis.com
