Nakivo has been very active with development and has been adding features quickly to the product. If you don’t remember, Nakivo launched their product with HTML5 interface. It was one of the first if not the first one. At least when look at the more prominent products. At that, HTML5 interface was a revolution at that time (most web based backup products used Adobe Flash). Many people didn’t understand why HTML5. Now, several years later, I hear other backup vendors talk about their vision and the future web interface. They get a lot of customer demand for that feature they say.
Combine vision of Nakivo, which got the product right from the start, with smart decision to add features quickly, with steady releases. They created a stable and solid foundation they got a winner.
What is new in Nakivo Backup and Replication 7.3
When you launch a backup product you can expect that you won’t get big corporation right away. The big ones are more careful about the switch. Even if they use a product which is not ideal, it will take some time for them to evaluate the product before they make a switch. That is the time you have to develop a stable foundation, add features which can be used by the majority and add special features for the big guys later in the process.
I think this happened with Nakivo now. They got all the most important features and now it’s time to also focus on the enterprise.
Nakivo has one of the best in class deduplication included in the product. They don’t charge an additional fee and it works across the repository. Repository based deduplication gives you much better data savings compared to competitors who used per job based deduplication. That is great as long as you use a classic NAS or data repository. Nakivo expanded NAS support to WD, Synology and QNAP. Now it’s logical that Nakivo start to support enterprise-grade NAS and dedicated purpose appliances from likes of NEC, HP, StoreOnce, NetApp, DELL and the list goes on.
Enterprises love using special appliances dedicated for backup. Why? The answer is simple. Deduplication appliances have hardware-based deduplication which is much faster compared to software-based solutions. Imagine that you have to backup like 20TB or even more of data. You need speed. Nakivo can with the latest release provide you with that speed as well. I found this example in a Nakivo release announcement:
When tested in a customer environment, the new type of repository in NAKIVO Backup & Replication v7.3 has demonstrated backup speeds that are 53 times faster than the regular backup repository. With a high-end NEC Hydrastor deduplication appliance as a target, NAKIVO Backup & Replication v7.3 backed up the customer VMs at an incredible 3.2 GB/s. The backup repository structure has also been improved for easier manageability. Now each backup with its recovery points is stored in a separate folder.
Wow, impressive.
To use a deduplication appliance all you have to do is to set up a backup repository with the option: A target is a deduplication appliance and Nakivo will optimize backup in a way that blocks will be stored in incremental files with periodic full backup, without the inbuilt deduplication. That way, hardware appliance will be able to make the most of backup files.
Conclusion
With the latest release, Nakivo has upped the game. Backup & Replication is now appropriate for even the big corporate environments where special hardware-based deduplication appliances rule the backup world. Direction for Nakivo is clear, enterprise and data center integrations while still being true to the course they set at the beginning. You can test the release with the free trial version or if you are a technician you can apply for the NFR license and test the product in your lab.
